What is a Premier League form table?

A form table is a league table that only counts recent games. Instead of adding up every match since August, it takes each club’s last five finished league games and awards the usual points: three for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. The club with the most points from those five games is first.

For example, a club that wins twice, draws once and loses twice has 3 + 3 + 1 + 0 + 0 = 7 points. Another club that wins once and draws four times has 3 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 7 points as well. The two are level on points, so we split them by goal difference in those five games.

Because it ignores older results, the form table shows who is playing well right now. That makes it a useful companion to the main league tables, which show who has been good over the full season.

How do we build the Premier League form table?

We take every finished Premier League game this season from our data feed and sort them by kick-off time. Then, for each club, we keep the latest five and add up the points. Games that are still in play or postponed do not count until they are finished.

Ties are split in a fixed order. First comes goal difference across the five games, then goals scored. If two clubs are still level after that, they appear in the order our feed returns them, so treat them as sharing a place. We never adjust the order by hand.

The coloured pills show the five results from oldest to newest, so the newest result is on the right. In short, you can read a run of pills like a short story of the club’s last month.

How do I read the form table?

Start with the points column, which is out of a maximum of 15. A club on 13 or 15 points is in outstanding form. A club on 0 to 3 points is struggling. Most clubs sit somewhere in the middle, so look at the goal difference to see how convincing the results were.

Next, check the Table column on the right. It shows the club’s position in the full league table, with an arrow that compares it with its place in the form table. A green arrow up means the club is playing better than its league position suggests. A red arrow down means it has been slipping, even if its season total still looks healthy.

Finally, click a club’s name to open its club page. There you can see its next fixtures, its results across all competitions and its squad, which gives context to the pills.

Why does form matter more than the full table?

The full table is slow to change. A club that collected points in August keeps them in September, even if it has since lost its way. The form table reacts quickly, so it shows turning points that the full table hides, such as a new manager effect, a returning key player or a run of injuries.

That said, form is not a prediction. It describes what has happened, not what will happen. Teams in great form lose games, and teams in poor form win them, because football has a lot of luck in it. Use the table to understand the story of the season, not to treat results as certain.

Meanwhile, the form table is a handy way to find the clubs that are quietly improving before the main table catches up. A side climbing the form table while still low in the league table is often worth watching.

What are the limits of a five-game sample?

Five games is a small sample, and that is the main thing to remember. A single freak result can swing a club by several places, and one hard run of fixtures can make a good team look poor. Therefore, treat large jumps with caution.

Opposition also matters. Five wins against the bottom clubs are not the same as five wins against the top clubs, and the table does not weight for that. Likewise, home and away games are counted equally, even though most clubs find home games easier.

Finally, the table counts league games only. A club that has played extra matches in the FA Cup, the EFL Cup or Europe may be tired, and that will not show up here. For the full picture, read the form table alongside the fixtures and results pages.

How can I use the form table before a match?

Pick the two clubs and compare their points, their goal difference and their arrows. If one club is on 10 points and the other is on 3, the first is clearly in better form. If both are close, the contest looks more even, and other factors such as home advantage matter more.

Then check the Premier League hub for the next fixtures and the latest scores. It also helps to look at each club’s recent results on its own page, so you can see whether a poor run came against strong teams.

In practice, the best use of the form table is as a quick sense check. It tells you in seconds who is flying and who is struggling, and it points you to the clubs worth a closer look.

Where does the form table data come from?

The results come from API-Football, a licensed football data provider, and we calculate the table ourselves from the finished games. We do not type scores in by hand. If a result looks wrong, tell us through our about page and we will check it against the official record.

You can compare any result with the official Premier League tables or with the BBC Sport table. Our editorial policy explains how we handle corrections and how we label anything we could not confirm.

The page caches the feed for about 10 minutes to stay fast and within our data limits. As a result, a goal from the last few minutes may take a short while to show. If the feed is ever unavailable, the page shows a clear message instead of wrong numbers.

If you follow the second tier too, the Championship hub has the same live data, and our guide to the Championship play offs explains how the six-team format works.

Each club earns 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss across its last five finished league games. Ties are split by goal difference in those games, then by goals scored.

When two clubs have the same points from their last five games, we rank them by goal difference in those games, then by goals scored.

How often does the form table update?

It refreshes automatically, usually within about 10 minutes of a match finishing in our data feed.

Where does the form table data come from?
