A clean sheet means the club did not concede in a finished league game. Ranked by clean sheets, then fewest goals conceded, then games played.

What is a clean sheet in the Premier League?

A clean sheet means a club finishes a game without conceding a goal. It is a team statistic, and a win, a draw or even a goalless draw can all be a clean sheet. For example, a 2-0 win and a 0-0 draw both give the club a clean sheet, while a 3-1 win does not.

In this table, we count clean sheets for each club in finished league games. We do not count games that are still being played, postponed or abandoned until the result is final.

How do we build the Premier League clean sheets table?

We take every finished Premier League game this season from our data feed and look at the goals conceded by each side. If a club conceded none, that game adds one clean sheet. We also count the games where a club failed to score, so you can see both ends of the pitch.

The order is set by clean sheets first, then by the fewest goals conceded, then by games played. If clubs are still level, they appear in the order our feed returns them, so treat them as sharing a place. We never adjust the order by hand.

How do I read the clean sheets table?

Start with the clean sheets column, which shows how many games each club has kept a shutout. Next, compare it with games played, because a club with six clean sheets in eight games is far more solid than one with six in sixteen.

The conceded column adds context. A side with many clean sheets but a few heavy defeats may be solid most weeks but fragile against the top teams. Likewise, a club with few clean sheets and few goals conceded may simply be playing low-scoring games. The failed to score column shows the other side of the same coin.

Is a clean sheet the same as a goalkeeper’s clean sheet?

Not always. This table counts a team’s clean sheets. Individual awards such as the Premier League Golden Glove credit goalkeepers, and the rules for crediting a keeper can differ, for example when a goalkeeper is replaced during a game. As a result, a keeper’s personal count may not match the number for his club.

If you want to compare goalkeepers, check the official Premier League stats page. Our table is the best guide to how solid each team has been as a whole.

Why do clean sheets matter?

Defensive records are a strong sign of how a club is performing. A side that keeps clean sheets only needs one goal to win, so shutouts and points tend to go together. That is why many title challengers and clubs fighting to avoid relegation can both be explained by their defensive numbers.

That said, a clean sheet is not the full story. Luck, the quality of opponents and a sending off can all change a result, and a team can also keep a clean sheet by playing with very little attack. Use the table with the league table and the form table for a fuller picture.

How can I use clean sheets before a match?

Look at the two clubs and compare their clean sheets and goals conceded. If one side has kept shutouts in most games, it may be hard to score against. If the other side often fails to score, that adds to the picture.

Then open each club’s page from the clubs list. There you can see recent results, goals by period and the next fixtures. The Premier League hub also brings together the latest scores and the table. None of this predicts a result, but it helps you understand what to expect.

How often does the clean sheets table update?

The table updates automatically, usually within about ten minutes of a match finishing in our data feed. We keep a copy of the feed for ten minutes to keep the page fast and to stay within our data limits. If the feed is unavailable, the page shows a clear message instead of wrong numbers.

Where does the clean sheets data come from?

We calculate the table ourselves from finished results in API-Football, a licensed football data provider. We do not enter scores by hand. If a total looks wrong, tell us through the about page and we will check it against the match record. Our editorial policy explains how we handle corrections.
