How does the Champions League league phase work?
Instead of small groups, the Champions League uses one league phase with 36 clubs in a single table. Each club plays eight matches, four at home and four away, against eight different opponents. A win earns 3 points, a draw earns 1 and a defeat earns none.
In other words, clubs do not all meet each other. Because the opponents differ, the table can look uneven until every club has played its eight games.
Which Champions League table positions qualify for the knockouts?
The top eight clubs after the league phase go straight to the round of 16. The clubs in ninth to 24th place enter a knockout play-off round to decide the remaining places. The clubs in 25th to 36th place are eliminated.
Therefore, the gap between eighth and ninth matters a great deal, because it decides who gets to skip the extra round.
How can I read the Champions League table early in the league phase?
Early in the league phase, clubs have played different numbers of matches, so raw points can mislead. Compare points per game instead, and check the played column before you compare two clubs. Goal difference is also useful, because it shows how convincing the results have been.
However, remember that each club faces different opponents. A club with a strong record against weaker sides may have an easier path than its position suggests, so use the table as a guide rather than a verdict.
Why is the Champions League table not split into groups?
The competition replaced the old group stage with a single league phase of 36 clubs. This means every club is ranked in the same table, and the positions decide who goes through. As a result, a strong result against any opponent can help, because all clubs are competing for the same places.
What does goal difference mean in the Champions League table?
Goal difference is the goals a club has scored minus the goals it has conceded. It is the first tie-breaker when clubs are level on points, so it can decide whether a club finishes in the top eight or in the play-off places. For example, a club that wins 4-0 gains four on goal difference, while one that wins 1-0 gains only one.
How is the Champions League table ordered?
Clubs are ranked by points. If clubs are level, goal difference comes next, then goals scored, and further tie-breakers are set out in the competition rules. Because of this, a club can sit several places above or below another club on the same points.
Moreover, early in the phase the table is very fluid, as clubs have played different numbers of matches. Check the played column before drawing conclusions.
Where can I follow the Champions League beyond the table?
For the full competition, visit the Champions League hub, which brings together the table, fixtures, results and scorers. Our Champions League fixtures page lists the upcoming matches, and the Champions League top scorers table shows who is scoring.
If you want our view on upcoming games, read the Champions League predictions. English clubs in the competition are also on the Premier League table, so you can compare their domestic form.
How do English clubs fit into the Champions League table?
English clubs appear in the table when they qualify, alongside clubs from across Europe. To see how they are doing at home, compare their position here with the Premier League table. A club that is strong in both is usually well placed for a deep run.
Meanwhile, you can open any English club’s profile from our club pages to see its fixtures, results and squad, which helps when you want to follow a particular side through the competition.
Where does the data come from?
The figures come from API-Football, a licensed football data provider. We do not edit the numbers by hand, and we do not estimate results. If something looks wrong, tell us through our about page and we will check it against the match reports.
This matters because accuracy is the point of a data page. Our editorial policy explains how we handle corrections and how often each feed updates.
How often does this page update?
The page updates automatically through the day, usually within about 10 minutes of new data arriving. We cache the feed briefly to keep the page fast and to stay within our data limits. As a result, a goal from a minute ago may not show straight away.
If the data feed is unavailable, the page shows the last saved version instead of an error, and it shows a clear message if no saved version exists.
