What does the Championship table show?
The Championship table shows where every club stands in the 2026-27 league season. Each row lists the matches played, the wins, draws and defeats, the goals scored and conceded, the goal difference and the points total. The points column decides the order, so it is the number to watch first.
Because every club plays 46 league matches, the table changes after each round of games. As a result, a club can climb or fall several places in a single weekend, especially early in the season when the gaps are small.
How is the Championship table ordered?
Clubs are ranked by points. A win is worth 3 points, a draw is worth 1 and a defeat is worth nothing. If two clubs are level on points, goal difference comes next, and goals scored comes after that. If clubs are still level after those measures, the league rulebook decides how they are separated.
In other words, two sides on the same points can sit several places apart. A club that wins narrowly and loses heavily may rank below a steadier rival, even though both have the same number of wins.
What do the positions in the Championship table mean?
The top two clubs are promoted to the Premier League automatically at the end of the season. The next clubs enter the play offs, and the play-off winner takes the final promotion place. Our Championship play offs guide explains how the knockout works.
At the other end, the bottom three clubs are relegated to League One. Because the division has 24 clubs and 46 matches each, the table can stay tight for months, and a short run of results can change a club’s whole season.
How can I read the Championship table properly?
Start with points and played. A club with fewer games played may sit lower than its real strength suggests, because it has matches in hand. Compare clubs on points per game when the number of fixtures differs, and use goal difference as a quick guide to how convincing the results have been.
It also helps to look at trends rather than one snapshot. Our Championship form table ranks clubs by their last five league games, so you can see who is rising and who is slipping. Likewise, our Championship predictions use the same underlying data to rate each fixture.
How does points per game change the picture in the Championship table?
Points per game is the fairest way to compare clubs that have played different numbers of matches. For example, a club with 10 points from 5 games averages 2.0 per match, while a club with 11 points from 6 games averages about 1.83. The second club is higher on raw points, yet the first is performing better.
Therefore, when you see a gap between two clubs, check the played column before drawing a conclusion. Over a full season the difference disappears, but early on it can be the whole story.
What does the Championship table not tell you?
A league table is a record of results, not a forecast. It does not show how hard each fixture was, whether a key player is injured, or how a club performs at home compared with away. Meanwhile, a club that has played several of the strongest sides may be better than its position suggests.
For that reason, we suggest reading the table alongside other pages. The form table shows recent momentum, the predictions pages show how we rate upcoming games, and each club profile shows the fixtures and results behind the numbers.
Where can I follow the rest of the Championship?
The table is one part of a wider picture. For the full competition, visit the Championship hub, which brings together the table, fixtures, results and stats. You can also check the latest results and upcoming fixtures, or follow every match on our live scores page.
If you like to see who is scoring the goals behind the standings, the Championship top scorers table updates alongside it. For a closer look at a single club, open its profile from our club pages, where you will find its fixtures, results, squad and history.
Where does the data come from?
The figures come from API-Football, a licensed football data provider. We do not edit the numbers by hand, and we do not estimate results. If a total looks wrong, tell us through our about page and we will check it against the match reports.
This matters because accuracy is the point of a standings page. Our editorial policy explains how we handle corrections and how often each feed updates.
How often does the Championship table update?
The table updates automatically, usually within about 10 minutes of new data arriving. We cache the feed briefly to keep the page fast and to stay within our data limits. As a result, a goal from a minute ago may not show straight away.
If the data feed is unavailable, the page shows the last saved version instead of an error, and it shows a clear message if no saved version exists.
