Our prediction: Draw (Close call)
Why this prediction?

Our numbers. We expect about 1.2 goals for Shakhtar Donetsk and 1.3 for Sporting CP, which gives a close call.

Domestic strength. Shakhtar Donetsk score 2.0 and concede 0.5 a game in Ukraine (1st in the table). Sporting CP score 2.3 and concede 1.1 in Portugal (3rd). We scale each by the strength of their league, so a goal against stronger opposition counts for more.

The league phase. Shakhtar Donetsk are 17th with 4 points (goal difference +1); Sporting CP are 12th with 6 (+3). Their Champions League form counts for more as the games add up.

What could go wrong. Comparing clubs from different leagues is harder than comparing two teams in one league, and Champions League games are decided by small margins. Rotation, injuries and suspensions are not in the numbers, so check team news before kick-off.

Our Champions League model is new. It rates each club from domestic goals scored and conceded, scaled by league strength, and blends in league-phase form as games are played. Predictions are not guarantees. 18+ only, gamble responsibly.

How do our Champions League predictions work?

Comparing two clubs from the same league is easy, because they have played similar opponents. A Champions League game is harder, because a side that scores freely in Portugal or Norway has not faced the defences of England or Spain. So the model starts by rating each club on the goals it scores and concedes in its own league, then scales that rating by how strong the league is. A goal against tougher opposition counts for more.

As the league phase goes on, each club’s Champions League results are blended in. After a few games they carry modest weight, and the weight grows with every match played. The model then estimates how many goals each side should score, works out which of a home win, a draw and an away win is the most likely after 90 minutes, and picks that result. If the home and away chances are almost level and a draw is a live outcome, it picks the draw instead.

How should you read a Champions League prediction?

Look at the label next to the pick before you read anything into it. A “strong lean” means the model sees one side as clearly more likely, a “clear lean” means a moderate edge and a “close call” means little separates the sides. Open “Why this prediction?” to see the domestic numbers, the league-phase position and the goals we expect from each side.

It also helps to check the context around a game. The Champions League top scorers page shows which forwards are in form, and the hub shows how tight the table is. If a team has already qualified or is chasing a place in the play-offs, that can change how hard it plays, and no model sees that.

Which Champions League games are hardest to predict?

Games between clubs from very different leagues are the hardest, because the league-strength scaling is an estimate, not a measurement. Early league-phase games are also tricky, since few results are in and the model leans on domestic form. Two-leg knockout ties add another wrinkle, because a side may play for a result over 180 minutes rather than win each game.

The biggest blind spot is team news. The model reads results and goals, not line-ups, so a rested star or a late injury is invisible to it. That is why we keep the language plain and never call a result certain.

How do these differ from our domestic predictions?

The domestic pages use one league’s table and recent form, which works well when both sides play each other’s opponents. This Champions League model is built separately because that assumption breaks down in Europe. The picks are also logged in their own record, so the Champions League results never mix with the Premier League predictions or the Championship picks. You can see every game across competitions on our football predictions today page.

How accurate have our Champions League predictions been?

Every pick is saved before kick-off and never edited afterwards. When a game finishes, we compare the result after 90 minutes with the pick and add it to the running total, so the record below includes our misses as well as our hits.

Before launch, we tested the model on the 54 league-phase games played so far. It called about 63% of results, against 59% for always picking the home side, and its forecasts were closer to what happened than a simple home-win baseline. That test used the same games we tuned the model on, and 54 games is a small sample, so we expect the live record to be lower and we will report it honestly. For more on what to expect, read how accurate are football predictions.

Where can you check the data behind each pick?

You can check the context for any game on its own pages. The fixtures and results pages list kick-off times and scores, the league tables show the domestic positions we refer to, and our club guides give background on a single side.

Champions League predictions: frequently asked questions

What are Champions League predictions?

They are our data-led picks for the Champions League games in the coming week: a home win, a draw or an away win for each game, with a label for how firm the pick is and a short reason behind every pick. They are estimates based on numbers, not certainties.

How is the Champions League model different from your league predictions?

Our domestic predictions lean on one league’s table and form. Champions League clubs come from different leagues, so this model rates each club on goals scored and conceded at home, scales that by the strength of their league and blends in league-phase form as games are played.

How accurate are your Champions League predictions?

The model is new, so the record is short. When we built it we tested it on the 54 league-phase games already played, where it called about 63% of results against 59% for always picking the home side. That test used the same games we tuned it on and the sample is small, so treat it as a starting point and judge the live record below.

How often are the Champions League predictions updated?

The fixtures and picks refresh through the day as the data changes. When a game kicks off it drops off the list and moves into the results record.

Are these Champions League betting tips?

No. They are predictions and analysis for information and entertainment, for people aged 18 and over. Nothing here is a guarantee or a recommendation to bet, and this page does not link to bookmakers.

Do the predictions allow for injuries and rotation?

Not yet. The model reads results and goals, not line-ups, so late injuries, suspensions and heavy rotation are not in the numbers. Check team news before kick-off.

Are the predictions free?

Yes. The picks, the reasoning and the full record are free to read, with no sign-up or payment.
