How are the Champions League fixtures organised?

The competition begins with a league phase of 36 clubs, and each club plays eight matches against different opponents. The matches are grouped into matchdays, and most are played in midweek. After the league phase, the knockout rounds begin.

As a result, the list above changes character during the season. Early on it shows league phase matches, and later it shows knockout ties as they are confirmed.

What is the Champions League play-off round?

The play-off round is a two-legged knockout between the clubs that finish ninth to 24th in the league phase. The winners join the top eight in the round of 16. Because of that, the later fixtures in the list depend on the final league phase positions, so they appear only once the draw is made.

How do I check one club’s Champions League fixtures?

Open the club’s profile from our club pages, where you will find its upcoming matches and recent results. For a quick view of the whole competition, use the Champions League table and see which clubs are close to the top eight.

What happens after the Champions League league phase?

The top eight clubs go straight to the round of 16, and the clubs in ninth to 24th place play a knockout play-off round. Our Champions League table shows the current league phase positions so you can see who is in each group.

Meanwhile, new fixtures appear in the list as soon as the data feed confirms the draw and the dates.

How do Champions League fixtures link to the rest of the site?

Because the fixtures feed the table, the results and the scorers chart, a match moves through several pages as it is played. For example, a fixture becomes a result, the result changes the Champions League table, and any goals update the top scorers list.

Meanwhile, our predictions page rates each upcoming match, so you can see our view before kick-off and compare it with the real score afterwards. In short, the fixtures list is the start of the loop that repeats on every matchday.

Why can Champions League kick-off times change?

Dates and times can move after the list is first published, usually because of broadcast selections or a postponement. Check the list again close to the match, particularly before you plan travel.

The list refreshes automatically, so it shows the latest dates the data feed has.

How can I follow English clubs in the Champions League fixtures?

Scan the list for the English clubs you follow, then check their Premier League fixtures too. Because Champions League games are usually played in midweek, a club may have a league match just a few days before or after, and that can affect how a team is picked.

For example, a club with a heavy run of European and league games may rotate its squad, which is worth keeping in mind when you read our predictions. In short, the two lists together give the full picture of a club’s schedule.

How do I use the Champions League fixtures list?

Each row shows the home club, the away club and the date and time of the match. Use it to plan which matches to follow, and look at the English clubs in particular, as they also play in the Premier League fixtures list.

For our view on the games, read the Champions League predictions, and for the competition as a whole, visit the Champions League hub. You can also follow matches as they happen on our live scores page.

What is the difference between fixtures, results and live scores?

Fixtures are matches that have not been played yet, results are final scores of finished matches, and live scores show games in progress. Because of that, a match moves through three pages in a single day: it starts as a fixture, appears on the live scores page while it is played, and ends up on the results page.

For example, you can check the fixtures list on Friday for the weekend, follow the games on Saturday through live scores and then read the final scores afterwards. In short, each page answers a different question, and together they cover the whole matchday.

Where does the data come from?

The figures come from API-Football, a licensed football data provider. We do not edit the numbers by hand, and we do not estimate results. If something looks wrong, tell us through our about page and we will check it against the match reports.

This matters because accuracy is the point of a data page. Our editorial policy explains how we handle corrections and how often each feed updates.

How often does this page update?

The page updates automatically through the day, usually within about 10 minutes of new data arriving. We cache the feed briefly to keep the page fast and to stay within our data limits. As a result, a goal from a minute ago may not show straight away.

If the data feed is unavailable, the page shows the last saved version instead of an error, and it shows a clear message if no saved version exists.
